वट सावित्री अमावस्या के दिन सावित्री ने यमराज से अपने पति सत्यवान के प्राणों की रक्षा की थी। मान्यता है कि वट सावित्री व्रत करने से पति दीर्घायु और परिवार में सुख शांति आती है। पुराणों के अनुसार वट वृक्ष में ब्रह्मा, विष्णु व महेश तीनों का वास है। इस व्रत में बरगद वृक्ष चारों ओर घूमकर सौभाग्यवती स्त्रियां रक्षा सूत्र बांधकर पति की लंबी आयु की कामना करती हैं।

देवी सावित्री का जन्म

मद्र देश के राजा अश्वपति ने पत्नि सहित सन्तान के लिये सावित्री देवी का विधि पूर्वक व्रत तथा पूजन करके पुत्री होने पर वर प्राप्त किया। सर्वगुण देवी सावित्री ने पुत्री के रूप में अश्वपति के घर कन्या के रूप मे जन्म लिया।

देवी सावित्री का अपने पति सत्यवान का वरण करना

कन्या के युवा होने पर अश्वपति ने अपने मंत्री के साथ सावित्री को अपना पति चुनने के लिए भेज दिया सावित्री अपने मन के अनुकूल वर का चयन कर जब लौटी तो उसे उसी दिन देवर्षि नारद उनके यहाँ पधारे नारदजी ने पूछने पर सावित्री ने कहा, “महाराज द्युमत्सेन के पुत्र सत्यवान की कीर्ति सुनकर उन्हें मैंने पति रूप में वरण कर लिया है।”

नारद जी द्वारा सत्यवान तथा सावित्री के ग्रहो की गणना

नारदजी ने सत्यवान तथा सावित्री के ग्रहो की गणना कर अश्वति को बधाई दी तथा सत्यवान के गुणो की भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा की और बताया कि सावित्री के बारह वर्ष की आयु होने पर सत्यवान कि मृत्यु हो जायेगी। नारदजी की बात सुनकर राजा अश्वपति का चेहरा मुर्झा गया उन्होने सावित्री से किसी अन्य को अपना पति चुनने की सलाह दी परन्तु सावित्री ने उतर दिया, “आर्य कन्या होने के नाते जब मै सत्यवान का वरण कर चुकी हूँ तो अब वे चाहे अल्पायु हों या दीर्घायु, मैं किसी अन्य को अपने ह्वदय मे स्थान नही दे सकती।”

देवी सावित्री और सत्यवान का विवाह एवं सत्यवान की मृत्यु

सावित्री ने नारदजी से सत्यवान की मृत्यु का समय ज्ञातकर लिया दोनो को विवाह हो गया। सावित्री अपने श्वसुर परिवार के साथ जंगल मे रहने लगी। नादरजी द्वारा बताय हुये दिन से तीन दिन पूर्व से ही सावित्री ने उपवास शुरू कर दिया।

नारद द्वारा निश्चित तिथि को जब सत्यवान लकडी काटने के लिये चला तो सास-श्वसुर से आज्ञा लेकर वह भी सत्यवान के साथ चल दी। सत्यवान वन में पहुँचकर लकडी काटने के लिए चढा। वृक्ष पर चढने के बाद उसके सिर में भंयकर पीडा होने लगी। वह नीचे उतरा।

सावित्री ने उसे बड के पेड के नीचे लिटा कर उसका सिर अपनी जाँघ पर रख लिया। देखते ही देखते यमराज ने ब्र्रह्या के विधान के रूप रेखा सावित्री के सामने स्पष्ट की और सत्यवान के प्राणो को लेकर चल दिये (कहीं-कहीं ऐसा भी उल्लेख मिलता हैं कि वट वृक्ष के नीचे लेटे हुए सत्यवान को सर्प ने डस लिया था) सावित्री सत्यावान को वट वृक्ष के नीचे ही लिटाकर यमराज के पीछे पीछे चल दी।

यमराज द्वारा देवी सावित्री को वरदान

पीछे आती हुई सावित्री को यमराज ने उसे लौट जाने का आदेश दिया। इस पर वह बोली महराज जहा पति वही पत्नि। यही धर्म है, यही मर्यादा है।

सावित्री के धर्म निष्ठा से प्रसन्न होकर यमराज बोले पति के प्राणो से अतिरिक्त कुछ भी माँग लो। सावित्री ने यमराज से सास-श्वसुर के आँखो ज्योती और दीर्घायु माँगी। यमराज तथास्तु कहकर आगे बढ गए सावित्री भी यमराज का पीछा करते हुये रही।

यमराज ने अपने पीछे आती सावित्री से वापिस लौटे जाने को कहा तो सावित्री बोली पति के बिना नारी के जीवन के कोई सार्थकता नही।

यमराज ने सावित्री के पति व्रत धर्म से खुश होकर पुनः वरदान माँगने के लिये कहा इस बार उसने अपने श्वसुर का राज्य वापिस दिलाने की प्रार्थना की।

तथास्तु कहकर यमराज आगे चल दिए सावित्री अब भी यमराज के पीछे चलती रही इस बार सावित्री ने सौ पुत्रो का वरदान दिया है, पर पति के बिना मैं पुत्रो का वरदान दिया है पर पति के बिना मैं माँ किस प्रकार बन सकती हूँ, अपना यह तीसरा वरदान पूरा कीजिए।

सत्यवान का जीवनदान

सावित्री की धर्मनिष्ठा, ज्ञान, विवेक तथा पतिव्रत धर्म की बात जानकर यमराज ने सत्यवान के प्राणो को अपने पाश से स्वतंत्र कर दिया।

सावित्री सत्यवान के प्राण को लेकर वट वृक्ष के नीचे पहुँची जहाँ सत्यवान के प्राण को लेकर वट वृक्ष के नीचे पहुँची जहाँ सत्यवान का मृत शरीर रखा था।

सावित्री ने वट वृक्ष की परिक्रमा की तो सत्यवान जीवित हो उठा। प्रसन्नचित सावित्री अपने सास-श्वसुर के पास पहुँची तो उन्हे नेत्र ज्योती प्राप्त हो गई इसके बाद उनका खोया हुआ राज्य भी उन्हे मिल गया आगे चलकर सावित्री सौ पुत्रो की माता बनी। इस प्रकार चारो दिशाएँ सावित्री के पतिव्रत धर्म के पालन की किर्ति से गूँज उठी।

Birth of Goddess Savitri

Ashwapati, the king of Madra, obtained a boon for the children along with his wife by fasting and worshiping Savitri Devi according to the law. Sarvagun Devi Savitri took birth as a daughter in the house of Ashwapati.

Goddess Savitri to bless her husband Satyavan

When the girl was young, Ashwapati sent Savitri along with her minister to choose her husband. When Savitri returned after choosing a bridegroom suitable for her mind, she was asked the same day by the god Narad, who came to her. Hearing the fame of Dyumatsen’s son Satyavan, I have chosen him as my husband.

Calculation of the planets of Satyavan and Savitri by Narada

Naradji, after calculating the planets of Satyavan and Savitri, congratulated Ashvati and praised Satyavan’s qualities and told that Satyavan would die when Savitri attains the age of twelve. King Ashwapati’s face withered after listening to Naradji, he advised Savitri to choose someone else as her husband, but Savitri replied, “As an Aryan girl, when I have chosen Satyavan, now whether he is short or long life.” I can’t give place to anyone else in my heart.

Marriage of Goddess Savitri with Satyavan and Death of Satyavan

Savitri learned from Naradji the time of Satyavan’s death, both of them got married. Savitri started living in the forest with her father-in-law’s family. Savitri started fasting three days before the day told by Nadarji.

When Satyavan went to cut wood on the date fixed by Narada, after taking permission from his mother-in-law and father-in-law, she also went with Satyavan. Satyavan reached the forest and climbed to cut the wood. After climbing the tree, his head started suffering from severe pain. He got down.

Savitri made him lie down under the tree of Bud and placed his head on her thigh. Seeing this, Yamraj clarified the form of the law of Brahma in front of Savitri and took away Satyavan’s life (somewhere it is also mentioned that Satyavan was bitten by a snake while lying under the banyan tree) Savitri Satyavan Having made her lie under the banyan tree, she followed Yamraj.

Boon to Goddess Savitri by Yamraj

Coming back, Savitri was ordered by Yamraj to return. On this she said, Maharaj where the husband is the same wife. This is the religion, this is the limit.

Pleased with the devotion of Savitri, Yamraj said, ask anything other than the life of the husband. Savitri asked Yamraj for light and longevity of mother-in-law’s father-in-law’s eyes. Yamraj went ahead saying aastu, Savitri also kept chasing Yamraj.

When Yamraj asked Savitri, who came after him, to return, Savitri said that there is no meaning in a woman’s life without her husband.

Yamraj, being pleased with the fasting religion of Savitri’s husband, again asked for a boon, this time he prayed to get back the kingdom of his father-in-law.

Saying goodness, Yamraj went ahead, Savitri still followed Yamraj, this time Savitri has given the boon of a hundred sons, but without a husband I have given the boon of sons, but without a husband how can I become a mother, this is my third Fulfill the boon.

Knowing about Savitri’s piety, knowledge, wisdom and husbandly religion, Yamraj freed Satyavan’s life from his loop.

Savitri took Satyavan’s life and reached under the banyan tree, where with Satyavan’s life she reached under the banyan tree where Satyavan’s dead body was kept.

When Savitri circumambulated the banyan tree, Satyavan came alive. A happy Savitri reached her mother-in-law and father-in-law, she got the light of her eyes, after that she also got her lost kingdom, and later Savitri became the mother of hundred sons. Thus the four directions echoed with the glory of following Savitri’s virtuous religion.
